Fernsehen auf dem eeePC mit dem WinTV Nova T-Stick

Vor etwa 2 Wochen habe ich im MediaMarkt für 22€ einen DVB-T-Stick gekauft: den WinTV Nova T Live von Hauppauge, also von einem renommierten Hersteller. Vor rund einem Monat habe ich mir den eeePC geleistet – beides zusammen ergibt einen extrem portablen Fernseher.
Im Folgenden möchte ich euch in Form eines Testberichts meine Erfahrungen mit dem Stick schildern, insbesondere im Bezug auf meinen eeePC 701 (Windows XP).
Der Lieferumfang
Im Paket befand sich neben dem eigentlichen Stick auch eine kleine (passive) Antenne, ein praktisches (aber kurzes) USB-Verlängerungskabel, eine Fernbedienung und eine passende Batterie, die Installations-CD und die Installations- und Bedienungsanleitung.
Die Einrichtung
Die Installation der Software verlief relativ problemlos. Weil man bekanntermaßen in den eee keine CDs einlegen kann, ladete ich mir die Installations-Exe von der Support-Seite von Hauppauge (Link). Danach musste erst einmal die Software in ein beliebiges (temporäres) Verzeichnis entpackt werden, bevor die Installation beginnen konnte. Die gesamte Installation bestand aus zwei Teilen: 1. Laden der Treiber, 2. Installation der WinTV-Software. Beim Installieren der Software konnte man feststellen, was alles zu der Software gehört: es gibt nicht nur das Programm zum Fernseh schauen – nein: daneben gibt es auch noch ein Programm, welches einen browserbasierten EPG erzeugt, einen Teletext-Viewer, ein Interface für die Fernbedienung und last but not least den “Kanal-Manager”. Wie sich das für einen Setup gehört, kann man einzelne Komponenten zur Nicht-Installation bewegen, aber in diesem Fall sind alle sinnvoll und gehören mit-installiert.
Nach dem erfolgreichen Installieren sieht man in der WinTV-Software – schwarz. Wieso? WinTV kennt zunächst noch keine Programme, erst muss man einen Kanalsuchlauf durchführen. Diese Aktion geht wenige Minuten – dann sieht man in dem PC-Fernseher erstmals ein live-Bild. Um Das Erste nicht auf Nr. 8 sondern Position 1 zu haben, kann man im KanalManager auch problemlos die Reihenfolge ändern. Sollte sich nach erstem Durchzappen Ernüchterung breit machen, weil nicht alle eigentlich verfügbaren Sender bereit stehen, kann man auch manuell die Kanalnummer eingeben. Damit ist es mir möglich, alle 12 Sender, die es bei uns in der Region gibt, zu empfangen.
Die Bildqualität
Weil die Einrichtung bei mir so unerwartet problemlos klappte war ich erstaunt, dass das Bild auf dem eee auch noch gestochen scharf ist. (Dass technische Geräte bei mir out-of-the-box ohne Probleme funktionieren, kommt äußerst selten vor.)
Fußballschauen darauf funktioniert ebenfalls einwandfrei, auch der Akku des eee hält ein Spiel lang durch – zumindest, solange es nicht in die Verlängerung geht, dann wird es kritisch. Ich habe noch keine Messwerte dazu, aber werde diese noch nachliefern.
Angeschlossen an meinen 19-Zoll-TFT werden zwar Schlieren und Bildartefakte bemerkbar, aber auf dem eeePC selber ist das Bild völlig ausreichend. Außerdem ist der Standort ja auch nicht ganz egal – an Orten, bei denen der nächste Sendemast näher steht, ist das Bild ja noch einmal deutlich besser.
Die Software
Wie schon angesprochen kommt der Stick mit einem unfangreichem Softwarepaket daher, die Bestandteile im Einzelnen:
- WinTV Das eigentliche TV-Programm, mit der man die Sender anschauen kann, Timeshift durchführen und Aufnahmen starten kann. Schnappschüsse der aktuell laufenden Sendung lassen sich mit der Leertaste anlegen. Es ist relativ leicht zu bedienen und dank Fernbedienung kommt im Vollbildmodus auch richtiges TV-Feeling auf.
- Scheduler Erstellt .job-Dateien für das “Programmieren” von Aufnahmeaufträgen.
- Kanal-Manager Kanalsuchlauf, Ändern der Reihenfolge der Kanäle und Ähnliches sind die Aufgaben Kanalmanagers. Er macht seine Arbeit eigentlich ganz gut, aber von Übersichtlichkeit kann bei diesem Programm keine Rede sein …
- VT Plus Programm um den Videotext anzusehen und zu speichern, Manko: WinTV und VTPlus können nicht gleichzeitig laufen.
- EPG Service Tool Erstellt einen 7-Tage-EPG (elektronisches Fernsehprogramm), den man im Browser anschauen kann.
- ir.exe Winziges Programm, dass die Befehle der Fernbedienung entgegennimmt
Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass die Software zwar nicht wirklich eingängig ist und jedes Programm eine völlig andere GUI, also ein völlig anderes Aussehen hat. Dennoch erfüllt sie die Zwecke sehr zufriedenstellend!
Der Praxistest
Für den eeePC ist so ein kleiner DVB-T-USB-Stick wirklich äußerst praktisch: ob man mal schnell Fußball schauen oder Nachrichten ansehen möchte, all diese Möglichkeiten stehen einem nun offen, auch wenn gerade kein öffentliches WLAN zur Verfügung steht. Auch der Videotext kann als eine Art Internetersatz gelten, kann man doch mit ihm sich auch mal schnell informieren oder Fußballergebnisse nachschlagen.
Der Stick braucht mit Antenne kaum Platz und lässt sich in jeder kleinen Tasche unterbringen.
Das Fazit
Ich bereue es in keinster Weise ihn gekauft zu haben – die 22€ waren gut angelegt und ich habe nun einen vollwertigen kleinen Fernseher. Würde ich Punkte vergeben, bekäme er von mir wohl 8 von10, Abzüge gibt es nur durch die etwas blöde Usability, die mich als Software-Schnellversteher aber nicht besonders stört.

Was heißt schon Spaß machen – klar, es ist kein Vergleich zu einem Fernseher, der die hundertfache Bildgröße (1,5m Breite) besitzt. Aber für viele Zwecke reicht er völlig aus – sei es draußen zu liegen und Fuba zu schauen oder bei Autofahrten, etc. Nur für das gemeinsame Fernseh schauen gemütlich zu Hause auf dem Sofa ist so ein siebenzöller natürlich nicht so das wahre, klar.
