Der Versuch einer Betriebssysteminstallation auf einem IBM Thinkpads R30

Gestern habe ich ein Laptop in die Hand gedrückt bekommen, auf das ich XP neu aufsetzen sollte. Es handelte sich dabei um ein IBM Thinkpad R30, welches mit einem Pentium 3 933MHz und 120MB RAM ausgestattet ist. Grafikkarte? Keine Ahnung, vermutlich irgendein Onboard-Chip.
An diesem Tag (Samstag) hatte ich allerdings keine Lust mehr mich damit zu beschäftigen und verschob das auf den nächsten Tag. Am Sonntag schaltete ich dann das Notebook ein und startete XP um einmal die Performance und die Daten anzusehen. Wie gesagt, ich fand heraus, dass es lediglich 933MHz und 120MB RAM besaß. XP lief auch alles andere als zufriedenstellend. Dann dachte ich mir – das sollte eh nur zum Schreiben von Texten verwendet werden, warum also nicht eine schmale Linux-Distri draufhauen. Ich las erst vor kurzem von “Xubuntu”, einer Ubuntu-Variante, welches auf schwache Rechner ausgelegt ist und keine aufwendige Desktopumgebung sondern lediglich Xfce besitzt und auch softwaremäßig sehr abgespeckt ist. Gut, ladete ich mir das also herunter, brannte das ISO-Image auf eine CD und steckte diese bootfähige CD in das Laufwerk. Als ich dann von der CD booten wollte (bzw. die Live-Umgebung starten wollte, wie das bei Linux-Distris ja so üblich ist) kam erstmal (nach einem Bestätigen von “Start Xubuntu”) ein Fehler, welcher angeblich mit dem Schalter “irqpoll” behoben werden soll. Okay, also nochmal neu gebootet, Parameter “irqpoll” eingestellt und die Live-Umgebung erschien nach einiger Ladezeit. Auf dem Desktop fand ich einen Punkt “Installieren” und klickte diesen natürlich gleich an (Maus und Tastatur funktionierten ohne Probleme). Daraufhin erschien (erneut nach langer Wartezeit) ein Assistent, der mich angeblich nach 6 Schritten zum Ziel bringen sollte. Das Problem war nur: nach dem ersten Schritt (der Auswahl der Sprache) brachte mich gleich der 2. vor große Probleme: es erschien eine Weltkarte, auf der ich eine Stadt in meinem Land und meiner Zeitzone wählen sollte (wie üblich Berlin). Aber anscheinend war diese Karte und die Auswahlliste mit diesen zig Städten zuviel für die knapp mehr als hundert MB Arbeitsspeicher: auch nach stundenlangem Warten tat sich nichts, auch der Mauszeiger bewegte sich bald nicht mehr, ebenso die Uhr, die stehenblieb. Ich lies diesen Setup bis spät in die Nacht laufen, aber wie gesagt: keine Änderung. Ich schaltete es also aus, und wollte es am nächsten Tag (Heiligabend) wieder versuchen. Am Montag konnte ich die GUI recht zügig starten, die Bootprobleme kannte ich ja bereits und wollte (bevor ich wieder auf den problembehafteten “Installieren”-Button klickte) Xubuntu ein bisschen ausprobieren. Nach etwas Ladezeit startete z.B. Abiword problemlos, auch der Dateimanager und Firefox hatten keine Probleme (aber auch FF brauchte ewig zum Starten). Kurzum: das System lief gut, aber hatte eben durch den niedrig bemessenen RAM (oder dem lahmen Laufwerk?) hohe Ladezeiten. So, nun wollte ich also wieder das System auf die Festplatte bannen. Nach der langen Wartezeit, konnte ich den 1. Schritt wieder problemfrei abschließen. Auch der 2. ging diesmal gut, dann der nächste Schritt: Tastaturschema. Auch ihn konnte ich bewältigen (alles ging eewig, aber es ging). Im folgenden Schritt sollte ich den admin-Account anlegen etc., dort hatte ich erneut keine größeren Probleme, aber er ging – wie erwartet – ewig (rund eine Stunde). Doch leider folgte auf den 4. Schritt der fünfte, in dem ich die Festplatte partitionieren sollte. Anscheinend war es zuviel für das Laptop, das “Partitionsprogramm” zu laden (obwohl ich davor Gparted ohne Probleme, und sogar ziemlich flott, starten konnte!) und es stürzte erneut irgendwann ab. Das merkte ich natürlich nicht sofort, sondern ich ließ es einfach während der Bescherung etc. weiterlaufen. Als es dann gestern Nacht immer noch nicht weiterging, sah ich mich gezwungen, es “hart” auszuschalten. Nun habe ich überlegt… und habe mich dazu entschlossen, Windows draufzupacken. Ich dachte an Windows 95, weil es auf meinem früheren 133MHzler PC (ebenfalls 120MB RAM) problemlos lief, auch Word 2000 lief darauf. Und weil ich von diesem PC eh noch eine CD und einen gültigen Key habe, war diese Lösung naheliegend. Doch irgendwie wollte das Notebook von dieser CD nicht booten – keine Ahnung, auf jeden Fall konnte ich kein Menü zum Installieren öffnen. Ich dachte auch daran, die Festplatte auszubauen, in meinen PC einzubauen und dann dort Xubuntu oder Win95 zu installieren. Doch leider konnte ich in einem der beiden leicht zu öffnenden Fächern keine Festplatte finden – und das gesamte Laptop wollte ich dann doch nicht auseinandernehmen. So blieb nur noch eine Möglichkeit: XP erneut installieren. Weil ich aber wirklich dachte, dass es keine gute Idee wäre, das gesamte XP dort zu installieren, habe ich erstmal eine angepasste XP-CD mit nlite erstellt. Beim ersten Versuch habe ich dort allerdings noch einen Fehler gemacht, sodass das auch nicht ging. Damit das nicht wiedervorkommen konnte, habe ich mir den Vmware Player gezogen, einen virtuellen PC erstellt und dort den 2. Versuch der modifizierten Setup-CD virtuell eingelegt. Da das problemlos funktionierte, habe ich nun die CD im Laptop drinnen und installiere gerade XP. Mal sehen, ob die Anpassungen so funktionieren, wie ich es mir gewünscht habe, und mal sehen, wie gut XP jetzt läuft.
Eigentlich sollte dieser gebrauchte Laptop ja ein Weihnachtsgeschenk von jemandem für jemand anderen sein …
Nachtrag:
Windows XP in meiner “Light-Version” läuft einwandfrei. Sogar DVDs lassen sich mit dem VLC ruckelfrei abspielen (hätte ich nicht erwartet!). Jetzt muss ich nur noch den Sound-Treiber installieren und das ganze ist fertig :-)
Fazit: Es ist bei älteren Systemen keine gute Wahl eine Linux-Distribution zu installieren. Windows XP tut seine Aufgabe auf solchen PCs sehr gut, besonders wenn es durch nlite abgespeckt wird.

naja wie wärs mit Damn Small Linux gewesen? DAS ist speziell für sowas optimiert.
aber irgwo ja auch unsinnig XP auf nem P3 und mit 120MB RAM zu insten… eher ma neues notebook, sonst hat man damit ja keine freude. Ich frage mich eh, wie xp davor drauf lief?!^^

Naja, XP lief davor schon – aber vor allem das Hochfahren ging ewig. Videos liefen auch nicht ruckelfrei etc. (und sie waren nicht HD ^^)
Damn Small Linux ist nicht für ältere Maschinen gedacht – es ist dafür gedacht, sehr klein zu sein (sagt ja schon der Name) und eben kaum Platz zu verbrauchen, damit es auch von einem Stick o.Ä. läuft. Nene, für solche Zwecke ist Xubuntu eigentilch schon gedacht.

Ich denke mal, du solltest für low-level pc’s etwas anpassungsfähigeres als (X)Ubuntu nehmen …
Immerhin hast du auch dein Windows “entschlackt”.
Hab hier ein 266MHz PII mit 168 MB RAM. Will ja nicht behaupten dass es rennt wie ein Dualcore :) aber es läuft flott genug (auch Open Office, Firefox etc ..).
System ist gentoo (ohne CrossCompiling auf einer schnelleren Maschine erfordert das _*GEDULD*_ auf einem so langsamen System, aber die hast du ja scheinbar (mehrere std warten bis die HD partitioniert ist – das dauert doch normalerweise nur 1 Sekunde).
Der Vorteil an gentoo ist, das du bei der langwierigen Installation der Programme besser drauf achtest, was du wirklich installierst.
Will hier aber keine gentoo-Werbung machen, das kannst natürlich mit jeder anderen distro machen, Slackware und Debian (xubuntu wohl auch, start halt nicht in den Xserver sondern gleich konsole wenns zu lang dauert :) sind bestimmt nicht schlecht aufm altn Lappi.
Du must halt nicht drauf vertrauen das die distro für deinen Computer super geeignet ist, sondern einfach schnell selbst n kernel kompilieren (dauerte bei meinem PII nicht so lange wie das kernel-konfigurieren immer dauert:), schlankes Desktop (evilwm, fluxbox etc) und gut ist.
Slackware + Kernel kompilieren dauert bestimmt nicht länger als die Geschichte mit nlite und Windows.

Das Problem ist nur, dass ich mich mit Linux praktisch gar nicht auskenne ^^.
Also ein Ubuntu hab ich schon mal installiert und dort auch einige Einstellungen vorgenommen etc., das mit Xubuntu hätte ich mir auch noch zugetraut. Aber dann selber eine Distri abspecken und selber Kernel kompilieren? Hätte ich keinen blassen Schimmer wie das geht.
Außerdem sollte das Laptop für eine Person < 11 Jahre sein, die mit Windows wohl noch am besten klarkommt. Ist halt altbewährt und ich könnte da auch noch den besten Support geben. (Wobei es vielleicht auch mal nicht schlecht wäre, mal keinen Support geben zu müssen *g)
Trotzdem danke für deinen Kommi, ich behalte deine Tipps mal im Hinterkopf :)
